Spoor, for solo guitar, has been commissioned by the International Guitar Foundation as a test piece for their 2020 competition.
To celebrate the 400th anniversary of his Amati viola London Sinfonietta principal violist Paul Silverthorne will be giving recitals in Italy and England including a new piece for viola and piano, Night’s Echo, by Philip.
The acclaimed American pianist George Fu gave the premiere of Short Stories, for solo piano at the Royal Academy of Music on 6 March. The set of nine miniatures is one of 200 solo pieces Philip is commissioning from composers around the world to celebrate the Royal Academy of Music’s bicentenary in 2022. The entire collection, along with freely available recordings, will be launched on a dedicated website during the bicentenary year.
From 26 July – 2 August Philip will be teaching on the Icon Arts Summer School in Transylvania where he will be Composer in Residence.
Philip has been commissioned by the Riot Ensemble to write a piece for their newly established concert series at Kings Place. The premiere will be in January 2021.
A new version of Scenes from the Life of Viscount Medardo for solo horn and ensemble, commissioned by Sounds Scotland, will receive it’s premiere in Aberdeen this autumn with virtuoso horn player Richard Watkins and the Red Note Ensemble.
Following on from the success of Leonora Pictures most recently performed at the Aspen Festival in July, Philip is currently collaborating with writer Jessica Walker on a chamber opera about the surrealist painter Leonora Carrington. The new theatre piece is in development and the opening scene will be workshopped in Summer 2020.
Volvelle is a new work for solo clarinet and electronics that Philip is writing for Mark Simpson. The premiere will be at Kings Place in late 2020 followed by a UK tour.
