The Red Note Ensemble, conducted by Geoffrey Paterson and with soloist Richard Watkins, will give the premiere of ‘Scenes from the Life of Viscount Medardo’ at the Sounds Scotland festival on 12 June.
In April, Philip wrote a short solo cello piece for Anssi Karttunen. ‘The Art of Memory’ is one of a set of solo pieces Anssi is collecting in memory of Oliver Knussen.
Philip has written a piano trio for the Trio Mazzolini, to be premiered at Folkestone New Music.
On 22 July, Andrew Watts and Gavin Roberts will give the first performance of ‘The Ballad of the Moon, Moon’, a setting of Lorca for counter tenor and piano, commissioned by the Marylebone Festival.
To celebrate the 400th anniversary of his Amati viola London Sinfonietta principal violist Paul Silverthorne will be giving recitals in Italy and England including a new piece for viola and piano, Night’s Echo, by Philip.
Philip has been commissioned by the Riot Ensemble to write a piece for their newly established concert series at Kings Place. The premiere will be in January 2021.
Following on from the success of Leonora Pictures most recently performed at the Aspen Festival in July 2020, Philip is currently collaborating with writer Jessica Walker on a chamber opera about the surrealist painter Leonora Carrington. The new theatre piece is in development and the opening scene will be workshoppe and filmed in August 2021.
Volvelle is a new work for solo clarinet and electronics that Philip is writing for Mark Simpson. The premiere will be at Kings Place in December 2021 followed by a UK tour.
